But even in the face of such a serious illness, he refused to surrender.<\/p>\n<p>The Ohio native was only 38 years old at the time \u2014 a very young age to be diagnosed with this asbestos-related cancer \u2014 but he knew he was ready to fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou might not win the war, but you must fight like you can,\u201d John shares. \u201c<strong>You might even surprise yourself with how strong you are<\/strong>. I\u2019ve been fighting nonstop for more than a decade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more about John\u2019s journey as a <a href=\"\/mesothelioma\/prognosis\/survivors\/\">mesothelioma survivor<\/a> and how music played an important part in his story.<\/p>\n<h2>How Secondary Asbestos Exposure Changed John\u2019s Life<\/h2>\n<p>In the spring of 2012, John started having flu-like symptoms that wouldn\u2019t go away. An X-ray showed fluid around his right lung (<a href=\"\/mesothelioma\/pleural\/effusion\/\">pleural effusion<\/a>), and doctors began running tests to find out what was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Over 3 months, he had two procedures to remove the fluid. Eventually, doctors confirmed John\u2019s mesothelioma diagnosis through <a href=\"\/mesothelioma\/diagnosis\/biopsy\/thoracoscopy\/\">video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He eventually learned that he had developed mesothelioma from <a href=\"\/asbestos\/exposure\/secondary\/\">secondary asbestos exposure<\/a>. When John developed a chest infection after <a href=\"\/treatment\/surgery\/extrapleural-pneumonectomy\/\">extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP) surgery<\/a>, he spent a month in the hospital. The cancer eventually spread to his lymph nodes, which had to be surgically removed, and he\u2019s received <a href=\"\/treatment\/radiation\/\">targeted radiation therapy<\/a> to keep it from coming back.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these setbacks, John has found ways to live a vibrant life filled with the things he loves most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remain in awe of what the human body can endure and still feel \u2018normal.\u2019 My body might look like I was stabbed, shot, or lost a fight with a bull, but I keep going,\u201d John says. \u201cAnd <strong>I continue to enjoy travel, music, teaching, and writing<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>The Beat of His Own Drum<\/h2>\n<p>Even though pleural mesothelioma has an <a href=\"\/mesothelioma\/prognosis\/life-expectancy\/\">average life expectancy<\/a> of 18 months, John continues to make memories with his wife and daughter.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s been a college professor for nearly 30 years, teaching courses in literature and the humanities. Also an accomplished musician, John plays the drums in three popular Cleveland indie-rock bands.<\/p>\n<p>Having only one lung, a slightly curved spine, and a missing rib didn\u2019t stop John from learning how to play cricket a few years ago. He even took up Pilates as an <a href=\"\/treatment\/alternative\/\">alternative treatment<\/a>, which he describes as \u201ca game changer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave you ever seen a three-legged dog running with the other dogs like that phantom limb is still intact?\u201d John jokes. \u201cThat\u2019s me every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He encourages others diagnosed with mesothelioma to find activities that bring them joy and purpose, whether it\u2019s enrolling in classes at their <a href=\"\/cancer-centers\/\">local cancer center<\/a> or pursuing creative hobbies at home.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blockquote-w-image \"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/John-Panza-photo-credit-Bryon-Miller.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><blockquote><p>\u201cPlaying music is a form of expression that <strong>translates into symptom relief for me<\/strong>.
