Monday\u2019s edition of Dr. Paul Donohue\u2019s syndicated \u201cTo Your Health\u201d column dealt with a question asked about a 79-year-old man who was recently diagnosed with chronic obtrusive pulmonary disease, or COPD. While the disease\u00a0– which is actually made up of two illnesses, emphysema and chronic bronchitis – is known primarily as a smoker\u2019s sickness, the man being discussed had never smoked tobacco.<\/p>\n
However, the article adds that the man had worked with asbestos throughout his life, and that the doctor had said the disease could have been caused by exposure to the dangerous fibers.<\/p>\n
Dr. Donohue agreed with the doctor\u2019s assessment, saying that the majority of COPD diagnoses are linked to smoking. However, the advancement in one\u2019s age and exposure to dangerous contaminants such as asbestos have been found to be a cause of the illness as well.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes aging brings about changes in the lungs that qualify as COPD. Air pollution, lung infections, exposure to dusts and other contaminants, and genetic illnesses are other causes,\u201d Donohue wrote.<\/p>\n
