This approach is unique in the medical community, where \u201cone size fits all\u201d solutions are often prescribed.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to directing MD Anderson\u2019s mesothelioma program, Dr. Tsao is a professor at the university&#8217;s Department of Thoracic\/Head and Neck Medical Oncology.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tsao is a leader in researching malignant mesothelioma and thoracic oncology. Her current focus is on finding new gene therapy <a href=\"\/treatment\/\">treatments for mesothelioma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She has written or co-authored more than 100 publications in multiple academic When it comes to research, Dr. Tsao concentrates on the molecular components of cancer so she can further individualize treatment plans.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tsao focuses on genes, such as the SRC kinase gene, and proteins, like N-cadherin, to determine their connection to cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Once she determines the relationship between genes or proteins and mesothelioma, she and other researchers use that knowledge to look for new treatments or better diagnostic methods.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tsao has also served as the National Health Institute\u2019s (NHI) principal investigator for phases 1 and 2 of a trial to test pemetrexed and cisplatin (standard <a href=\"\/treatment\/chemotherapy\/\">mesothelioma chemotherapy<\/a> drugs) with or without cediranib maleate \u2014 a substance that may inhibit tumor growth \u2014 to treat pleural mesothelioma.<\/p>\n<h3>Proton Therapy<\/h3>\n<p>One of Dr. Tsao\u2019s areas of expertise is proton therapy. While <a href=\"\/treatment\/radiation\/proton\/\">proton therapy<\/a> has been used to treat other forms of cancer, she helped develop this procedure as a treatment option for mesothelioma.<\/p>\n<p>Proton therapy is a form of external beam radiation therapy.
